Naked Body Scanners

Naked Body Scanners Now At An Airport Near You

According to Deeper Digital Penetration, naked body scanners are due to be deployed at the airports depicted below.

body scannerBody imaging scanners are more efficient in getting passengers through the long airport security to which we’ve all become accustomed. In just a few seconds, this equipment can detect weapons and explosives hidden under layers of clothing without any bodily contact by the security officers.

These scanners will be able to “see” through clothing and according to various reports, seem to have been accepted by most airline passengers.

Privacy Is Safe? Or Is It?

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) maintains that privacy is maintained via image obscurity – the local security officer will not see the image and the officer viewing the image remotely does not see the passenger. So far so good, maybe.
Additionally, the images will not be stored or printed and will apparently be deleted once viewed. I’m not suite sure if I believe this one!

Some Issues

The issues as I see with naked body scanners are: -

  • What if the images are stored and accidentally leaked. This is especially an issue with high-profile people such as athletes and movie celebrities. This could be the start of the “flying digital paparazzi”!
  • What kind of radiation will our bodies be subjected to? According to reports, it is minimal. But what does that mean and what tests have been conducted thus far. Maybe TSA wants to fry the bad guys before they board the planes. That would be fine if we knew who they were and only those people were subjected to these scans.
  • Where else will these body scanners show up next? Local buses and train stations. Perhaps elementary and high schools. Local libraries? Sports stadiums? Office and government buildings? Local swap meets? It seems the application areas are endless. Scary!
