Webcams Supposedly Used For Remote Spying
According to an article in a Canadian website (http://www.thestar.com/news/world/article/767429–schools-gave-students-computers-then-used-webcams-to-spy-on-them-lawsuit), a school in Philadelphia is being sued because of alleged spying on students and parents (in their own homes) via Apple laptop computers that the school had issued!
The spying came to light when one of the school officials accused a 10th grader of “improper behavior at home”.
The reason that the school district set up the webcams, so they say, was to locate a lost or stolen computer. Right! The district also issued another statement: -
“The webcams would not be used again unless there were “express written notification to all students and family,” superintendent Dr. Christopher McGinley said in a statement.
So I guess they plan on continuing using the remote webcams even with a lawsuit pending.
This whole thing seems utterly ridiculous to me that the school district would even consider setting up technology where remote spying could occur. They obviously had not thought this one through properly!
